Emergency Recipe Substitues

When you're cooking, there will always come that awful time when you can't find an ingredient that you absolutely need. That ingredient is so vital that if it doesn't show up, your food making plans will be ruined. Don't worry though. I've got your back with these ever so handy substitutes. You're welcome ;)


1 tablespoon cornstarch—2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder—½ teaspoon cream of tartar + ¼ teaspoon baking soda

1 cup sugar—1 cup packed brown sugar or 2 cup sifted confectioners’ sugar

1 cup honey—1 ¼ cups sugar + ¼ cup liquid

1 cup corn syrup—1 cup sugar + ¼ cup liquid

1 square (1 oz.) unsweetened chocolate— 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder + 1 tablespoon shortening or cooking oil

1 cup whipping cream, whipped— 2 cups whipped dessert topping

1 cup buttermilk— 1 tablespoon lemon juice or vinegar + 1 cup whole milk (let stand for 5 minutes before using)

1 cup whole milk— ½ cup evaporated milk + ½ cup water or 1 cup water + 1/3 cup nonfat dry milk powder

1 cup light cream— 1 tablespoon melted butter + 1 cup milk

1 egg— 2 egg whites + 1 teaspoon vegetable oil

1 teaspoon lemon juice— ¼ teaspoon vinegar

½ cup (1 stick) butter or margarine— 7 tablespoons vegetable shortening
