Hozier is one of the most prominent
artists of the present day. No one saw it coming, especially with the
overwhelming presence of bubbly pop tunes in the top charts, but there he is.
With blues undertones and what he defines as an African American feel, there's
nothing like him in the music industry.
Yes, Hozier's songs do often relate
to sex and intimacy, but the album as a whole exploits topics interconnected
with self identity and personal inner struggles.
Personally, what first captured
my attention were the bold, swaying words he exerts with such force. The
typical artist doesn't express their thoughts on such things as the church,
which is what grasps your interest. Using his resonating voice and blatant
approach of social issues as a weapon, Hozier lulls you in and you can't
help but give in. His words are coated with emotion at such an extent that
chills are definitely guaranteed to make an appearance.
The music video to Take Me To
Church, Hozier's most recognized work, amassed millions of view due to the
harsh issues of homophobia it addresses. Though I wish it weren't true, the
depictions of vicious attacks against LGBT youth the video captured are not an
exaggeration of such targets.
Fun fact: his mom designed the cover
art for his renounced albums. Isn't that awesome!?
Read the interview he gave the New
York magazine here
I read it myself and it's great to
hear the positive attitude channels and the change he promotes through his
music and new found influence.
